On the afternoon of August 9, 2026, a resident reported a microburst about two miles southeast of Royse City. A barn was destroyed. Nobody measured the wind speed. It was a short, violent burst of wind, and then it was over.

That is how a lot of wind damage happens out here. If you need roof repair in Royse City, TX after a storm like that, the damage may be obvious, like shingles in the yard, or it may be hiding on the back slope where you cannot see it. Here is what wind and microbursts do to a roof, what you can safely do right away, and how to decide whether to repair or replace.

What a microburst is, and why roofs take the hit

A microburst is a downburst: a rush of air that drops out of a thunderstorm, hits the ground and spreads out in every direction. The wind is straight-line, not spinning like a tornado, and it covers a small area for a short time. That is why one street can lose shingles and fences while the next street over is fine.

Don't let the size fool you. On August 26, 2026, a downburst hit Watauga and other parts of Tarrant County. An NBC 5 meteorologist put its winds at about 70 mph, though the National Weather Service had not finalized the speeds, and it caused a partial collapse of a commercial roof in Watauga.

What wind and microbursts do to a roof

Wind damage follows a pattern. It starts at the weak points and works inward.

  • Blown-off shingles. Whole shingles gone, usually along the ridges, corners and edges first. What is left is underlayment or bare decking.
  • Torn shingles. Pieces ripped off, with jagged edges and nail heads showing.
  • Creased and lifted shingles. Shingles that got folded back and dropped down again. They look fine from the ground, but the seal is broken.
  • Ridge cap damage. The shingles that cap the peak of the roof take wind from both sides and are often the first to go.
  • Loose flashing and vents. Metal flashing at walls and chimneys can pull loose, and turbine vents can get bent or knocked over.
  • Debris. Broken limbs can scrape off shingles, puncture the decking or crush gutters.

Ridges, corners and edges usually take the worst of the wind.

Metal roofs are not immune. Wind gets under panel edges and can loosen fasteners or peel panels back. On March 14, 2024, sheet-metal roof panels were blown off a strip mall in Prosper.

Safe temporary fixes after wind damage

The first few hours after a storm are about keeping water out and keeping you safe. The actual roof repair can wait a day or two. These steps cannot.

  1. Stay off the roof. Wet shingles are slick, damaged decking can give way, and a lot of wind damage comes with lightning. Look from the ground and from inside.
  2. Take photos and video before anything gets moved or covered. The Texas Department of Insurance says to photograph and record the damage. Get the roof from every side, the shingles in the yard, and any stains or drips inside.
  3. Protect the inside. Put buckets under drips, move furniture and electronics, and pull back wet carpet if you can.
  4. Get openings covered. TDI says to cover holes and save your receipts, and that your policy may pay for temporary repairs. A tarp should be installed by someone who can do it safely and fasten it so the next gust does not rip it off.
  5. Call your insurer if the damage looks real. TDI advises filing as soon as you can after strong winds damage your home. Filing deadlines vary by policy, so read yours. For a step-by-step look at the claim itself, see our guide to filing a roof insurance claim. Your policy and your insurer have the final word; this is not legal or insurance advice.

Roof repair in Royse City, TX: repair or replace?

Most wind damage is a roof repair. A good roof repair in Royse City, TX usually means replacing the damaged shingles, re-sealing the ones around them, fixing flashing or vents, and checking the decking underneath. Repair is usually the right call when:

  • The damage is in one area, like a corner or one ridge.
  • The rest of the shingles still lie flat and are flexible enough to lift without cracking.
  • The roof has plenty of life left.

Replacement starts to make more sense when:

  • Shingles are blown off, torn or creased across several slopes.
  • The shingles are brittle and break when a roofer lifts them to make the repair.
  • You are fixing wind damage again and again.
  • The roof is near the end of its life anyway. InterNACHI puts typical life expectancy at about 20 years for 3-tab asphalt shingles, about 30 for architectural shingles and 40 to 80 for metal, and notes that hot climates shorten asphalt shingle life a lot. Texas summers count.

If you do replace, ask about wind ratings and what they require. As one example, Owens Corning says that as of August 1, 2026, its Duration Series shingles carry wind warranty protection up to 160 mph, but only when its component requirements are met and starter shingles are installed on both the eaves and the rakes. Ratings like that depend on how the roof is installed, not just on what is in the bundle.

Sometimes the honest answer is a new roof. The commercial building below is a Total Pro Roofing job in Royse City. The old corrugated metal roof was rusted across the panels, and it was replaced with a new standing-seam metal roof.

Whether it is a house or a commercial building, the decision comes down to the same things: how much of the roof is damaged, how old it is, and what it will cost you to keep patching it over the next few years. You can see more finished jobs in the gallery, and the roof replacement page explains how a full replacement works.
