Clogged Gutters in Heath, TX: What October's Rain Exposed
By Total Pro Roofing ·

If water poured over the front of your gutters during the first week of October, you were not the only one. Clogged gutters in Heath, TX, and all over Rockwall County got their first real workout in months when the remnants of Hurricane Polo soaked DFW. Gutters that sat dry all summer, half full of leaves, dust and shingle granules, suddenly had to move a lot of water in a few hours. Plenty of them could not keep up.
Now the leaves are coming down, and that makes it worse. Here is what an overflowing gutter does to your house, how to check yours from the ground, and when it is a cleaning job versus a repair.
What the October rain showed us
This fall went from one extreme to the other. DFW Airport went 67 days without measurable rain until a storm on September 21 finally broke the streak. Less than two weeks later, Polo's remnants arrived. CBS Texas reported that October 1 totals around the Metroplex ran from just under 3 inches to nearly 6 inches, more rain than July, August and September combined. By October 2, much of DFW had picked up more than 4 inches.
We do not have an official rain total for Heath itself, but you did not need a rain gauge to see what happened. If your gutters had been collecting debris all summer, that was the storm that found out. Another round on October 4 brought 1 to 2 inches to parts of the region.
The rain is gone. The damage from overflow usually is not, because most of it happens where you cannot see it.
Why clogged gutters in Heath, TX cause more than a mess
A gutter has one job: catch the water coming off the roof and send it down the downspout, away from the house. When it is packed with leaves, the water has to go somewhere else. InterNACHI, the home inspectors' association, warns that overflowing gutters "cascade over the under-eave structures, possibly causing moisture related-damage." In plain terms, that means:
- Fascia rot. The fascia is the board the gutter is fastened to. When water sits behind a clogged gutter, the wood stays wet, the paint peels and the board softens. Once it rots, the gutter screws lose their grip and the gutter starts to sag.
- Wet roof edges. Water that backs up can wick under the first row of shingles and soak the edge of the roof decking and the soffit underneath. That is how a gutter problem turns into a roof problem.
- Water at the foundation. Overflow drops straight down next to the slab instead of leaving through the downspout. After a summer that dry, the ground along your foundation went from bone dry to soaked in a day. You want that water carried away, not dumped in a line along the house.
- Washed-out beds and stained brick. Look for a trench in the mulch right under the eave line, or dark streaks running down the brick.

Packed gutters cause trouble in winter too. During the January 2026 winter storm, DFW Airport stayed at or below freezing for 58 straight hours, and the Winter Storm Warning included Rockwall County. A gutter full of wet leaves holds water, and that water freezes, adding weight to a gutter that may already be pulling loose.
Hail, granules and your gutters
Your gutters also tell you something about your roof. Early on the morning of May 23, 2026, a trained storm spotter reported 1-inch hail near Heath, according to Storm Prediction Center reports. Hail knocks the protective granules off asphalt shingles, and those granules wash into the gutters with the next rain.
A little grit in the gutter is normal on any shingle roof. A thick layer of it, or a pile at the bottom of every downspout, is worth a closer look. It can mean hail bruised the shingles or the roof is wearing out. Dents in the gutters and downspouts are another sign hail hit the house. If you see either, read our guide to a hail damage roof inspection in Rockwall before you call your insurance company.
How to check your gutters from the ground
Most clogged gutters in Heath, TX are easy to spot from the yard, and you do not need to climb anything to check them. Walk around the house and look for:
- Water sheeting over the front of the gutter, or running down behind it, during a steady rain
- Grass, weeds or seedlings growing out of the gutter
- Gutter runs that sag, tilt the wrong way or pull away from the fascia
- Drips at the seams and corners after the rain stops
- Peeling paint, dark stains or soft spots on the fascia and soffit
- Downspouts that dribble instead of gush, or empty right against the slab
- Granules piled up at the downspout outlets

If you clean your own gutters, use a sturdy ladder on level ground and have someone hold it. Stay off the roof itself, and leave two-story homes to someone with the right equipment. The back side of a two-story is where most people get into trouble.
When to clean clogged gutters, and when to repair them
InterNACHI's advice is simple: clean your gutters twice a year. Around Heath and the rest of Rockwall County, the timing that makes sense is once after the trees finish dropping their leaves in late fall, and again in late winter, before storm season. The National Weather Service in Fort Worth notes that severe weather in DFW peaks in the spring, so you want clear gutters going into it.
If you have big trees hanging over the roof, you may need to clean more often. Gutter guards can cut down on how much collects, but they still need checking.
Cleaning fixes a clog. It does not fix damage. It is time for a repair when:
- The fascia behind the gutter is soft or rotted
- Gutters still sag or pull loose after they are cleaned
- Seams leak or sections are dented from hail
- Downspouts are crushed or dump water at the foundation
Rotted fascia needs to be replaced before gutters go back up, or the gutters will not hold. Our gutter services page covers repair and replacement, and if water got under the roof edge, a roof repair may be part of the fix.

Does insurance cover gutter damage?
It depends on what caused it. A gutter that clogged and overflowed is usually treated as maintenance. Gutters dented by hail or torn loose by wind may be part of a storm claim, depending on your policy. The Texas Department of Insurance says to file a claim as soon as you can if hail or strong winds damaged your home, and to take photos and video. Deadlines vary by policy, so check yours or ask your agent. Our storm damage page explains how the process usually goes.
