Impact Resistant Shingles in Texas: Class 4 Roofs and Insurance Discounts

If you live in Wylie, Murphy or Lavon, you have probably had the hail conversation with a neighbor more than once. On March 25, 2025, storm spotters reported 1.5-inch hail near Wylie with winds around 60 mph. This year, spotters reported 1-inch hail near Murphy on April 27 and near Lavon on June 2. Sooner or later the question comes up: if I need a new roof anyway, are impact resistant shingles in Texas worth it? The answer depends on your roof, your insurance company and how long you plan to stay in the house. Here is how it works.

What makes impact resistant shingles different

From the street, impact resistant shingles look a lot like standard architectural shingles. The difference is in how they are rated. Impact-rated shingles are tested under a standard called UL 2218 and given a class rating. Class 4 is the one that matters most in Texas, because it is the rating the Texas Department of Insurance says gets the highest premium credit when an insurer offers a roofing discount.

For example, Owens Corning rates its Duration STORM shingle "UL 2218, Class 4" for impact resistance. When you compare products, look for the Class 4 rating on the manufacturer's product information, not just the words "impact resistant" in a sales pitch.

One thing to be clear about: impact resistant is not the same as hail-proof. On April 27, 2026, hail near Fate left holes in a metal roof. Big enough hail can damage any roof. A Class 4 rating tells you the shingle passed a tougher impact test. It does not mean you will never need to call your insurance company again.

Why hail keeps coming up in Wylie, Murphy and Lavon

The National Weather Service in Fort Worth says large hail, damaging winds, flooding and tornadoes occur nearly every year in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex, and severe weather peaks in the spring. The east side of Collin County has had its share. A few of the storm reports from the last two springs:

  • March 25, 2025: Storm spotters reported 1.5-inch hail near Wylie with winds around 60 mph, 2-inch hail in southeast Allen, and 1.5-inch hail near Sachse that piled up 4 to 6 inches deep.
  • June 8 to 9, 2025: Along with damaging straight-line winds across DFW, spotters reported 1-inch hail north of Wylie.
  • April 27, 2026: Spotters reported 1-inch hail near Murphy, during the same storm that brought reports of 2-inch hail near Rowlett, Fate and McLendon-Chisholm.
  • June 2, 2026: Spotters reported 1-inch hail near Lavon, and large branches came down south of Wylie.

If your roof took any of those storms and you have not had it looked at, start there. Our guide to a hail damage roof inspection explains what hail does to shingles and what to look for.

Impact resistant shingles and Texas insurance discounts

This is the part most homeowners care about. According to the Texas Department of Insurance, impact resistant roofing may be eligible for a premium discount. A few details matter:

  • Each insurer sets its own discount. TDI says the amount is set by the insurance company on a company-by-company basis. Two neighbors with the same roof can see different numbers.
  • Class 4 gets the highest credit. Among impact-rated roofs, TDI says a Class 4 roof covering would receive the highest premium credit.
  • There is a form for it. The roofer who installs your roof completes TDI form PC068 to document it. Ask your insurer how and when they want to receive it.
  • The state is pushing insurers, not requiring them. On September 16, 2026, TDI issued Commissioner's Bulletin B-0008-26, which encourages insurers to offer "meaningful, actuarially supported premium discounts" for mitigation that includes impact-resistant roofing materials. Encouraging is not the same as requiring.

So the honest answer is that a Class 4 roof may qualify you for a discount. Ask your insurer before you decide.

Questions to ask your insurance agent first

Call your agent before you pick shingles, and get the answers in writing:

  1. Do you offer a discount for a Class 4 roof? If so, how much would it be on my policy?
  2. What do you need from me? Form PC068, the final invoice, product information, photos?
  3. When does the discount start? And does it need to be renewed or re-documented?
  4. Does a Class 4 roof change anything else on my policy? Ask specifically about hail and wind coverage and deductibles.

Those answers, plus quotes for both standard and impact resistant shingles, give you real numbers to compare instead of a sales pitch.

Are impact resistant shingles worth it in Texas?

For a lot of homeowners, the best time to make the switch is when the roof is coming off anyway, after a hail claim or because the old roof is worn out. A few things tip the decision toward Class 4:

  • You plan to stay in the house for years
  • Your insurer offers a meaningful discount for a Class 4 roof
  • Your neighborhood has a track record of hail
  • You are already replacing the roof, so you are only comparing shingle to shingle

A roof is a long-term decision. InterNACHI puts the typical life of architectural asphalt shingles at about 30 years and 3-tab shingles at about 20, and notes that hot climates drastically reduce asphalt shingle life. If your roof is near the end of that range, our post on the signs you need a new roof can help you decide whether it is time.

Installation matters as much as the shingle. Manufacturer ratings come with conditions. Owens Corning, for example, says its Duration Series shingles carry wind warranty protection up to 160 mph only when its component requirements are met and starter shingles are installed on both the eaves and rakes. Ask whoever installs your roof how they meet the manufacturer's requirements.
